Winter Fragrance Guide: Benzoin, Styrax & Cashmeran
Winter perfumes demand more from their ingredients. They must project through layers, cling to scarves, and linger warmly in cool air. At Connection Parfumerie, we focus on the most comforting and complex notes to wear in the colder months. This season, our spotlight is on three winter heroes: Benzoin, Styrax, and Cashmeran. In this guide, we explain how each behaves in perfumery and introduce the standout niche fragrances we’ve handpicked to showcase their best sides.
Styrax – Balsamic Smoke & Winter Depth
What is it? Despite the name, Styrax in perfumery doesn’t come from Styrax trees — it’s from Liquidambar (sweetgum). A sticky, resinous sap is collected when the bark is cut, then aged into a smoky, leathery resin rich in vanilla-balsamic warmth.
Why winter? Styrax offers a deep, resinous warmth that diffuses softly in cold air. Its fixative properties hold onto fragrance molecules longer in crisp weather, making it ideal for long, cosy nights.
Olfactive profile: smoky, leathery, vanilla-balsamic, amber-spicy
Skin tip: On warmer skin, Styrax becomes richer and sweeter; on drier skin, it layers with smoky sharpness.
Perfumes featuring Styrax:
- Parfums Quartana – Ierofante: Smoky-leather with suede, nutmeg & pyrogenic Styrax. Award winner.
- Parfums Quartana – Poppy Soma: Floral‑spicy blend with gardenia, rum & smoky Styrax.
- Bohoboco – Dark Vinyl Musk: Styrax melds with vinyl musk, incense & leather—dark and jazzy.
- Mendittorosa – Sogno Reale: Marine‑leather dream with Styrax, amber woods & hyraceum.
Cashmeran – The Soft, Musky Architect
What is it? Cashmeran is a synthetic molecule from IFF with dry wood, musk, and amber nuances—designed to replicate the soft warmth of cashmere.
Why winter? It offers a warm, diffusive base like wrapping your scent in a cashmere sweater. Especially effective layered with resins, spices, or florals.
Olfactive profile: musky, warm woods, soft amber
Skin tip: Creamier on warm skin, more mineralic on dry skin.
Perfumes featuring Cashmeran:
- Gritti – Super Nova: Ozone & gunpowder over Cashmeran & grey amber—electric warmth
- Mendittorosa – Lacura: Neroli, caramel & Cashmeran—soft, glowing intimacy
- Strangers Parfumerie – Sweet Farewell: Thai dessert gourmand with woody Cashmeran base.
- Gritti – Gossip Night: Lychee & caramel sparkle, softened by Cashmeran
- Mendittorosa – Le Mat: Clove, rose & patchouli on a Cashmeran base—poetic warmth
Benzoin – The Sweet Glow Beneath
What is it? Benzoin is a vanilla-like resin from Styrax trees in Southeast Asia—warm, balsamic, and soothing.
Why winter? It creates a glowing amber comfort, softens sharper notes, and adds longevity—ideal for cold-weather wear.
Olfactive profile: sweet resin, vanilla, warm amber
Skin tip: Rich and velvety on warm skin; powdery on dry skin.
Perfumes featuring Benzoin:
- Imaginary Authors – Memoirs of a Trespasser: Smoky woods, paper & Benzoin nostalgia.
- Goldfield & Banks – Desert Rosewood: Aussie spice & rosewood on syrupy Benzoin.
- Memoize London – Magnus: Oud & incense anchored by silky Benzoin.
- Mendittorosa – Osang: Myrrh, honey & Benzoin in a sacred resin blend.
